Greenyard Flowers UK, the world’s largest daffodil producer, has secured the highest UK fresh produce industry accolade as Fresh Produce Business of the Year 2017 which was presented in front of an audience of over 500 people at the gala evening, hosted by British comedian, actor and broadcaster Hugh Dennis at the Intercontinental Park Lane Hotel, London on Thursday 8 June 2017.

The Fresh Produce Business of the Year award is given to the very best performing business among all the winners in the 2017 Fresh Awards categories of supply chain, retail and business excellence.

Nigel Jenney, Chief Executive of the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC) commented “Greenyard Flowers UK is a paragon for our industry and a world leading floral supplier.  We highly commend this forward thinking sustainable and efficient business which has transformed British daffodil production”.

Earlier in the evening Greenyard Flowers UK proudly claimed the Floral Supplier of the Year 2017 award.

Over the past three years Greenyard Flowers UK has developed a specialist business, growing, picking and packing almost 500 million stems of daffodils, every one picked by hand.  Greenyard Flowers UK has achieved a 60% multiple retailer market share in the UK, as well as building exports to mainland Europe and to the United States of America.

Investment is key for sales growth with the development of processing, storage facilities and bespoke equipment to improve handling and processing of cut and bulb daffodils.

Greenyard Flowers UK has transformed traditional British daffodil production by examining every detail of the supply chain to remove cost and introduce efficiencies, as well as introducing modern progressive agronomic techniques. Innovation in varietal development, patented packing and packaging equipment delivers benefits for retailers by extending the season.

Greenyard Flowers UK is recognised as the world’s largest daffodil producer, as well as being the home of the National Dahlia Collection, with over 1,600 new and heritage varieties. A successful website and marketing campaign for the Collection was topped with Gold Medals at all three 3 Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea, Hampton Court and Chatsworth Shows, winning a 3rd consecutive Gold at Chelsea this year.

Greenyard Fresh UK Get Noticed at local Careers Fair

Greenyard Fresh UK Ltd were delighted to participate at the Spalding Careers Fair, held at the South Holland Centre in the town. The purpose of attending the event was to promote Greenyard Fresh UK, raise awareness of the name change as well as to highlight current job vacancies. It was a well-attended event with around 400 attendees on the day.

Utilising new Greenyard marketing equipment and giveaways the HR team set up a truly eye-catching display. Further to the display, and to encourage interaction with attendees a small competition was devised. Individuals interested in joining Greenyard Fresh UK attempted a ‘word search’ challenge with their entry being submitted into a prize draw to win a fruit box. The lucky winner was Selina Barwick who received the box which contained a wide variety of fruits supplied by Greenyard Fresh UK.

Participation in the Careers Fair proved to be valuable for the company with the HR team discussing many different types of job roles with local individuals and other local companies.

Apprenticeships Promoted to Local Pupils

Greenyard Fresh UK were proud to be the sole fresh produce company invited to join other companies in a tour of local schools to promote apprenticeships. To add a different perspective to the presentations a pink bus was used as a mobile classroom.

Helen Parker, Greenyard Fresh UK Training Officer was on board to give a presentation about the company and talked to the pupils about the food industry and the importance of apprenticeships. To support the presentation Daryl Crane, apprentice engineer at Greenyard Fresh UK gave the pupils a first-hand account of his experience with the company and the opportunities and benefits his apprenticeship has given him.

Spalding Academy and The Arthur Mellows School in Peterborough were stops along the pink bus’s route.

WellBeing Week

Greenyard Fresh UK Ltd and Greenyard Flowers UK Ltd participated in WellBeing Week which took place between the 27th February and 3rd March 2017.

Well Being 1

WellBeing week was a M&S initiative however the Greenyard UK HR & training team promoted and ran the event. The retailer provided a ‘toolkit’ of literature and other aids so that the company could meet a set standard required by the retailer. Prior to WellBeing Week, posters and email communications were sent out across the business to promote the event.

Well Being 2

All colleagues, both employed and agency could participate in all the activities, which took place across all the UK sites. Leaflets and other information about WellBeing Week were posted on noticeboards and displayed in site canteens. Two competitions were held, both took place at the Spalding and Cornwall sites:

  • Healthy Eating Quiz
  • Word Search

To encourage healthy eating and drinking three initiatives took place:

  • Bowls of mixed fruits were placed in departments across all sites, the fruit consisted of apples, pears, plums, nectarines, peaches and grapes
  • Water Challenge 1, whereby colleagues within each department were challenged to drink 5 glasses of water each working day of the week
  • Water Challenge 2, ‘A Refill for a friend Water challenge’. The colleague who provided the most refills during the week received a prize

The feedback regarding the event was very positive with some colleagues actively changing their eating habits to improve their wellbeing.  The most significant change is the increased awareness of colleagues to drink more water throughout the working day.

New Year, New Name

As from 30th December 2016, ‘UNIVEG Katopé UK Ltd’ has changed its name to ‘Greenyard Fresh UK Ltd’

This January, parent company Greenyard has decided to combine all four constituent companies – UNIVEG, Pinguin, Noliko and Peltracom under one unified banner. The renaming further endorses the Greenyard Group as a global market leader in fresh and prepared fruits and vegetables and growing media.

‘UNIVEG Katopé UK’ became part of the ‘Greenyard Foods’ group back in June 2015.
